About the Role
To lead and deliver a highly adapted English curriculum and whole-school literacy strategy for students with complex SEND. This role combines classroom leadership with a vital outreach function to deliver home-based tuition for children missing education (CME), supporting their academic progress and eventual reintegration.

Key Responsibilities
English Leadership
· Designing an English curriculum, model outstanding teaching and use data to drive student progress (tailored to EHCP targets and diverse learning profiles).
Whole-School Literacy
· Lead strategies to embed reading, writing and vocabulary development across all academic subjects, collaborating with therapeutic teams.
Staff Development
· Design and deliver professional development (CPD) to support teachers and LSA’s in implementing specialised literacy and phonics interventions.
Home Tuition
· Coordinate and deliver targeted home-based learning for children missing education (CME) to bridge academic gaps and support their return to school.
Person Specification
Criteria | Essential | Desirable |
Qualification and Training | · Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent. · Degree in English or related subject. | · Postgraduate qualification in SEND (e.g., NASENCO). |
Experience | · Proven experience teaching English within a SEND or alternative provision setting. · Experience working with children missing education (CME). | · Experience leading a core subject or whole-school initiative. · Experience conducting home visits or community outreach. |
Knowledge and understanding | · Deep understanding of specific learning difficulties (e.g., ASD, ADHD, SEMH, Dyslexia). · Knowledge of EHCP processes. | · Familiarity with alternative communication methods (e.g., Makaton, PECS). |
Skills and Abilities | · Ability to differentiate curriculum for complex needs, analyse student data, coach staff and safely manage home visits. |
